What are the nonmetals and maybe what are the The periodic table of elements what are the metals and Going to think about things as metals and as nonmetals. I'm going to introduce a broad classification of the elements, and in general, we're just To dig a little bit deeper and talk about the types of bonds that are likely to be formedīetween different elements. Idea of bonds between atoms, and we talked about the types of bonds, ionic, covalent and metallic. In a previous video, we introduced ourselves to the We can't do anything to change the polar covalent bond into an ionic bond because it's the identity of the elements which is determining the type of bond. So hydrogen and oxygen do not form an ionic bond simply because they do not have a large enough electronegativity difference. This would place the hydrogen oxygen bond in the polar covalent range instead of the ionic range. Hydrogen's electronegativity value is 2.20 while oxygen is 3.44, which result in a difference of 1.24 (3.44 - 2.20 = 1.24). Using the Pauling scale of electronegativity we need a difference greater than 2.0, x > 2.0. The very electronegative atom in an ionic bond will attract electrons to itself to such a degree that it removes electrons from the other, less electronegative atom. A large electronegativity difference means that a very electronegative atom was bonded with a not so electronegative atom. So it's unclear as of now what it is.įor an ionic bond to happen, the electronegativity difference between the two bonding atoms has to be large enough. Which would be a break from the trend of the group of unreactive gases at normal conditions. It's in the same group as the noble gases (which are nonmetals), but has been hinted that it may be solid under normal conditions and significantly reactive. So since so few atoms of Og have been created it's hard to say conclusively what it's properties are as of now. It was given the "-on" suffix since it belongs to group 18 along with the noble gases who all have suffixes of "-on". In 2016 is was officially decided to name it Oganesson (which the chemical symbol of Og) after Russian physicist Yuri Oganessian whose team helped synthesize superheavy elements 107 through 118. Ununoctium was a placeholder name for element 118 giving by the IUPAC in 1979 which was intended to be used until its discovery was confirmed since the people who discover an element gain the right to name it. Firstly, element 118 is no longer named ununoctium and has not been named so since 2016. In each chapter, Venba and Kavin explore their familial relationships through food, which plays out in puzzles where the player guides them through a smudged, half-remembered, incomplete family recipe. These range from Venba finding out she’s pregnant with Kavin in the 1980s, shortly after the family has immigrated to Canada from India, through Kavin as a grown adult in the 2010s. It follows a woman named Venba, her husband Paavalan, and their son Kavin through a number of key moments in their lives. Venba is a story about what was happening on the other side of that kind of love. I was loved through hot chai pressed into my hands first thing in the morning, through gazing daunted at so many plates of singara, and through hauling a massive suitcase of biriyani and spinach and lamb home that we ate effortlessly for weeks after. I didn’t grow up in a household where cooking happened with any regularity, so it wasn’t until meeting Amma and Moni for the first time that I learned what it meant to be loved intensely through food. When I went to meet my fiance’s family in Georgia for the first time in 2021, I too was loved in this way. But what had me in tears well before the actual emotional turning point of the scene was how clearly the developers managed to convey food as an expression of relentless love. The scene is wonderfully executed in so many ways - the context, the timing of the cooking and the music, and the way Venba’s confidence in the kitchen comes across through gameplay. There’s a beautiful scene in the second half of Venba where Venba, a mother with an adult son, spends all day joyfully cooking a veritable feast of different foods. Ultimately, the choice between "Automatic" and "Disabled" for hardware-accelerated decoding may require some trial and error to determine which setting works best for your system and the HEVC files you are playing. The HEVC codecs are no longer available for free on the Microsoft Store. If you encounter any problems, such as stuttering or artifacts in the video, you can then experiment with the "Disabled" option to see if it improves the playback experience. HEVC or High Efficiency Video Coding is a popular codec used by companies around the world. Open the HEVC file on your media player and load the HEVC file. If my kids are playing multiple rounds, I usually give the losing team, who now has more trash in their yard than the winning team, a 10-second head start before I start the music and let the winning team play again. In between rounds you can offer refinements and throwing tips as needed. You can use any type of soft ball, but the one’s I’m using in the video are 7-8″ uncoated foam balls which aren’t super durable, but are really awesome for little kids because it is IMPOSSIBLE to get hurt when taking one to the face.ĭuring the game I remind students to go to “Jail” if they break a rule (although some of them are honest and actually put themselves in jail) I use my “trash meter” to count the trash in both yards, and the one with the least trash is the winner, winner, chicken dinner! No one throws any trash after the music stops. Last thing, when the music stops, everybody stops. Only use the designated throw (no kicking).Don’t cross the fence and trespass in the other teams yard.Only pick up one piece of trash at a time.Good game! Nice job! Way to go! Congrats! Talk to your kids about how to be Helpful and not Hurtful.Īsk each team what they’ll say if the other team wins? Practice being a Good Sport BEFORE the game starts. I’m not worried about who wins and who loses, I just want to make sure my kids practice their throwing skills, BUT it is a great opportunity to practice being a good sport and congratulating the other team when they win □ Pro tip: The team with the most trash in their yard at the end of the game loses. When the game starts, you pick up the trash (balls) and throw it into the other team’s yard. When you get done with it, hopefully your brain is working again, and you stop doing things that are illegal. If you trespass into the other team’s yard, you have to go to jail (the bench), and sing the ABC song. Crossing the fence is trespassing, which is also illegal. There are two teams and two yards, with an invisible fence between them. Getting Yard of the month is no joke… and sometimes your neighbors can get sneaky and “misplace” their trash in your yard. If you get yard of the month, you’re pretty much the BOSS in the neighborhood that month and walk around like… They have a competition to see who has the nicest looking yard and the house that has the nicest-looking yard gets a sign that says “yard of the month” in their yard (major cool points). This game is based on the same thing that happens in my neighborhood every month… I normally focus on underhand throwing with my K-1st students and switch to overhand throwing as my focus for my 2nd graders. You can also modify the game to work on kicking skills, striking with paddles, or pretty much whatever skill you’d like to work on. In this game, you can focus on whatever throw you want or you can allow students to choose the throw they would like to work on. This game is an activity that allows you to work on throwing skills with younger students. More importantly, you begin to understand the importance of sisterhood and sacrifice. Throughout the game you’ll learn so much about the characters, the world of witching, and snippets of what’s happening on earth. The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood starts out simply enough, a witch has grown bored after being in exile for several hundred years and makes a pact with a demon to allow her to see her friends and begin practicing the fine art of tarot card reading again. I had been eagerly anticipating The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood after reviewing Essays on Empathy for Monstervine and feeling like I was truly experiencing something novel. Dealing with the teens, putting up the radio transmitters, and figuring out what the heck is going on in Riley’s hometown of Camena is a thrilling ride that’s a worthy sequel to one of my favorite games from 2016.ĭeconstructeam has a way of tapping into very human emotions and experiences and doing fantastical things with them. Attempting to set up the rest of the radio transmitters, Riley and Jacob run into several teens trying to amplify the dimensional portal, connected with a cult that one of the teen’s guardians started. While erecting radio transmitters across the coast, Riley, our protagonist, and her local guide Jacob experience a dimensional portal opening up above the aforementioned Edwards Island. Like the first game, Oxenfree II: Lost Signals takes place over the course of a single night that reveals fears, doubt, and the ongoing and very human struggles of all the characters involved. Hot off the heels of their first game, Night School Studio dropped their follow-up in 2023 taking place on the mainland as opposed to the spooky Edwards Island. Despite its flaws, Final Bar Line is the ultimate Theatrhythm experience and consumed a considerable amount of my time in 2023, both on and offline. Even the online multiplayer which seemed silly and pointless at first, was incredibly fun and enjoyable to play. Music aside, each track contained challenges for your party to complete while you slapped at buttons on your controller, adding a little passive-strategy to your rhythm playing. Fortunately, boasting over 400 tracks, you’re likely to find quite a few of your favorites in a very playable format. Unfortunately, with its arcade game roots in Japan, Final Bar Line centers around versions of songs that circle around three minutes long. Since its inception on the 3DS, Theatrhythm has always been an exceptional blend of rhythm and RPG strategy. I always thought the mixing of video game music with a rhythm game made way more sense than something like Guitar Hero: Van Halen. Likewise, the structure of the game’s puzzles to slowly introduce you to concepts before having you execute them and think outside of what was shown is what makes the design of Cocoon so masterful. Puzzles that were simple enough for me to understand but also requiring enough thought that some trial-and-error was involved was the perfect blend of brain bending. I blasted through Cocoon’s admittedly short playtime over the course of a single day and found myself unable to put the game down. Cocoon not only is a stunningly beautiful game, it’s also an extremely well-designed game. I have strong roots in point-and-click adventure games and by extension, puzzle games. Weird to start off my list with a game that is neither a narrative masterpiece (debatable) or a Japanese Role-Playing Game (objectively) but Cocoon is a truly excellent exception to the rule. So enjoy this list of narrative masterpieces and Japanese Role-Playing Games. I love playing games that evoke emotion and make me feel something but I’m also a stupid baby that loves watching numbers go up. I got to play some really bad games in 2023 but also some really awesome ones, and I think we’ll just focus on the awesome ones today. But I also got to play some great games in 2023, so maybe it’s a wash. I got diagnosed with chronic pain which sent me into a nasty depression and had me writing way less than I’d like. I’m pretty pessimistic for an optimist, so just about every year of mine is a tumultuous year. These partly explain why an elderly motorist may drive more slowly. As age increases, there is a reduction in muscle mass and elasticity, bone mass, central and peripheral nerve fibers. Motor skills: Aging causes decreased physical abilities, such as gross and fine motor skills and reflexes, thereby rendering the driver physically unable to perform at a safe level.Physical abilities such as motor skills are important for driving ability: Additionally, older drivers with hearing loss demonstrate worse driving performance in the presence of distractors than those with good hearing and restricted driving mobility. Studies have shown that elderly with hearing loss are more likely to be involved in crashes and commit traffic violations. Hearing: Age-related hearing loss or presbycusis is a common condition in people over the age of 65.Glaucoma leads to peripheral vision loss and blindness in advanced disease. Other common age related vision conditions that can affect driving performance are glaucoma and macular degeneration. This increases the light scattering by the eye's optical system and is associated with causing disability glare and increased risk of being involved in a crash. Vision: With aging, the lens of the eye loses its transparency and becomes cloudy, a condition commonly known as cataracts. The following are two senses that are important for safe driving: There are a multitude of conditions that correlate with old age and have negative effects on senses, physical abilities, and driving capabilities. Senses, physical abilities, and cognition The AARP staunchly opposes testing elderly drivers on the basis of age as age discrimination, and argued the decision to retire from driving should be left to the individual. Others believe there should be increased testing to ensure older drivers are capable of safe driving. Senior citizens are seen by some as among the safest drivers on the road, as they generally do not speed or take risks, and they are more likely to wear seatbelts. This creates controversy in regulating driving in the elderly. Īs the process of aging varies from one person to the next, the age at which an elderly person's ability to safely operate a motor vehicle declines varies between persons. These restrictions may be placed either by the law or their insurance provider which vary by state. Some older adults may be permitted to drive, but with added limitations such as the amount of driving they can do, the hours in which they can drive, or the distance from home they can travel. Some states require persons above a specified age to take certain tests when renewing their licenses, up to and including a road test, or to receive a physician's certificate stating they are medically fit to operate a motor vehicle. Most state laws allow senior citizens to continue driving provided they meet the same requirements as younger adults. This can be challenging because few senior citizens are voluntarily willing to give up their own car keys. Despite these measures, often, family members of an elderly person are faced with the responsibility of trying to get them to give up driving. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, precautionary measures include driving in daylight and good weather, planning the route before departing and receiving an eye exam once a year. Although, there are some voluntary measures a person can utilize to check their driving abilities. There is currently no age cutoff preventing an older adult from driving in the United States. Physical strength, mental acuity, and motor function begin to deteriorate as a person ages, but the degree of decline varies from person to person. The most common violations include: failure to obey traffic signals, unsafe turns and passing, and failure to yield. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a senior citizen is more likely than a younger driver to be at fault in an accident in which they are involved. When frailty is accounted for and older drivers are compared to younger persons driving the same amount the over-representation disappears. Due to their physical frailty, older drivers are more likely to be injured in an accident and more likely to die of that injury. In 2019, drivers 65 years and older accounted for 8,760 motor vehicle traffic deaths, and 205,691 non-fatal accidents. Driving is said to help older adults stay mobile and independent, but as their age increases the risk of potentially injuring themselves or others significantly increases as well. In 2018, there were over 45 million licensed drivers in the United States over the age of 65-a 60% increase from 2000. The correlation between old age and driving has been a notable topic for many years. These points tend to be quite thin relative to their length, and in the best examples are uniformly flaked to create a consistent cross-section through the length of the blade, often not exceeding 4 mm in thickness (see Hoffman 1997:214-18 also see Justice 2002:307-9, despite the error in ascribed dates). Gatlin points are side-notched triangular points with elongated, finely serrated blades, horizontally oriented deep side notches that range from U-shaped to soft V-shaped, squared shoulders, deep basal indentations forming pronounced ears, and sharp junctures between the basal and lateral edges of the ears. This article presents a wider view of the Norton Allen points themselves and explores some of the questions surrounding them, including the identity of the knapper or knappers responsible for the most elaborate specimens, the source of the chert used, and the social factors implied in the use of the points in mortuary contexts in the Gila Bend area.Īny discussion of the Norton Allen points naturally begins with the numerous and striking Gatlin and Citrus points (figure 1). The two point types, commonly referred to as Gatlin and Citrus Side-notched, are common in the collection but represent neither the stylistic variation nor the range of workmanship present in it. 60, 78) these are reprised here in figure 1. Norton's projectile point collection is best known to most researchers through two commonly reproduced photographs of showpiece arrowheads that Norton had placed in Riker mounts (see Hoffman 1997:figs. In this article, I use the last three terms interchangeably to refer to Hohokam-era arrowheads. A spear point is a large point hafted on a thrusting or throwing spear, a dart point is a somewhat smaller point hafted on a dart thrown with an atlatl, and the terms arrowhead, arrowpoint, and projectile point generally refer to small points hafted on arrows for use with a bow. The terminology I use here is standard among Hohokam lithic analysts. And beside those were the hundreds of broken, fire-warped, fire-shattered, and not-so-well executed examples that have not yet been highlighted in published photographs. Points by the dozen, points by the hundreds, impossibly long, impossibly thin, impossibly intricate, impossibly voluminous, one after another after another. Every drawer sliding open, every box and box peeked into, was a revelation. My fifteen years of work with archaeological assemblages from all regions of Arizona and countless hours of poring over photographs of points in published reports were slim preparation for the sheer amazement I experienced upon viewing the collection in person. The projectile points in the Norton Allen Collection are, quite simply, breathtaking. |
